I just replaced the carbon brushes on my 517. But it sounds just as loud as it always did... :signhelp:

Probably because the new brushes are not broken in yet. After some use they should quiet down. If not then it's probably your bearings.

the springs are bent because the wire pulls them. but jeeze thats a bad brush!

i can relate, i keep all the broken pieces out of lawnmower engines i blow up. and i keep bad bearings from vacs too.

Seriously though, your commutator probably isn't contructed properly and the bars have valleys inbetween them instead of the insulation being level with the surface of the bars. That can create a LOT of noise, especially if there's too much tension (pressure) from the spring. Could also be the grade of carbon your brushes are made of, some may be too hard or too soft for certain motors.
